The specialised techniques used for permanent cosmetics are often referred to as "micro-pigmentation", "micro-pigment implantation" or "derma graphics". The cosmetic implantation technique deposits coloured pigment into the upper reticular layer of the dermis. Permanent Cosmetic procedures can be very subtle or dramatic depending on what you or the client is looking for.

As an expert in the field of colour analysis and makeovers, a permanent make-up artist will identify the micro-pigmentation shades that would work with a particular client’s hair, skin and eye colour. a permanent make-up artist will also analyse a client’s facial shape and features to determine the most complimentary look for the individual requirements of that particular client. Procedures take from 30 to 120 minutes. Local anaesthesia is often used prior to the procedure with makes the procedure painless. If local anaesthesia is not used, the procedure can be uncomfortable to a certain degree. Various types of local anaesthesia are available, some of which require a doctor or dentist to administer.
